A Christmas Tale
Sig up students with these event ideas
Here’s an idea you should definitely be paying me for…
I used to throw an incredible Christmas party at my music school. It was always so much fun—fake snow, an open bar, music, games… the whole shebang. I’ll circle back to this in a minute.
Recently, I was at my girlfriend’s house in Irvine, CA, and I noticed a flyer on the door. It was promoting a mini Christmas village at one of her neighbors' homes. If you’ve ever been to the UK or Europe during the holidays, you know every city has a Christmas village set up in the town center. They’re absolutely magical! So I thought, “Wow, this sounds like a fun time,” and the best part? We could walk right over there! Free hot chocolate, Santa, etc.
Then I noticed at the bottom of the flyer: "Brought to you by the realty team of Mike and Carol Brady." (That wasn’t their real name, but it sounded good in my head!)
I thought, "This is a genius idea!" And honestly, you can do it even better.
Here’s how:
Host your own Christmas event, but make it open to the public. Go old school and flyer your neighborhood with an invite to a free Christmas event at your music school. You could have some students and teachers perform, hand out free food, make it festive, and send everyone home with a goodie bag that includes some info about your school. Heck, you could probably even get some local businesses to donate items for the goodie bags to make it even more special.
And why stop there.
Halloween? Host a “Trunk or Treat” event in your parking lot.
Easter? How about an Easter egg hunt at your school, paired with an instrument petting zoo for the kids to explore and get hands-on with music?
These ideas are super easy to pull off and don’t have to break the bank. You can adapt them based on your space or the type of facility you have.
Even if you’re a solo teacher, you can still find a venue to host something fun for one of these events. It doesn’t have to be a massive production to make an impact. Sometimes the simplest events are the ones that resonate the most.
